96 Honda Civic Speaker Install
Today, Andrew and I installed some Alpine Type-R 6.5" speakers in his '96 Honda Civic hatchback. We were unsure if they were going to fit in properly, and sought out information on the 'net to see if anyone had done it yet. With information from our limited results, we figured it should be feasible with a little plastic cutting of some inner door pieces. He brought over the stuff we needed (car, speakers, and a dremel tool).
I don't have a picture of what it looked like before we cut the baffle out of the door, but here's what it looks like now, after we trimmed out the plastic that we didn't need.
Next, we had to trim the adapter that came with the speakers to fit with the car. Here's Andrew trimming off some of the excess from it.
After it was trimmed, we attached it to the door with the screws from the old speaker.
Then, we hooked up some wiring harnesses that Andrew had picked up from Best Buy (much easier than stripping wires). Finally, we just had to attach the speaker to the new adapter piece with screws. Our first speaker didn't go in just right, so we had to bust out the dremel to smooth out some of the edges. There's a plastic piece that surrounds a metal piece inside the door. The trick was to get rid of as much plastic as possible down to the metal, otherwise the speaker is just too big.
And there it was, we got them both in. The first one took us about an hour, but the second one only took us about 25 minutes. And, I got to play around with a Dremel and am pretty efficient with it now.
